So, the first question is, why wear a bra?
Almost every woman in the world wears a bra daily. It’s like part of a female’s body as they go to adulthood. From training bras to the real deal bras.
Over 90% of North American women wear a bra, many without ever asking why. It’s like almost zombie like that we slip right into them before going out of the house.
Despite the discomfort and all the speculations and claims that this piece of clothing has brought negative impacts on women’s health. Some started to burn their bras and went braless. Some, couldn’t let go of the norm of wearing bras.
In the creation of bras, it’s primary purpose is to cover the breast. As civilization developed, so as the social class. Women started to dress up and look good for the society.
Now the simple underwear evolved to an actual sexual garment and emphasized the sexual nature of the breast. This can obviously seen, for example, by the terminology used to advertise bra: Enticing, hot, ravishing, seductive etc. It is no wonder feminist symbolically burn their bras in the 60’s
Which is more comfortable, with or without bra?
This would depend on the breast size; a very large and heavy breasted woman usually need to wear breast for support to avoid feeling pain and discomfort if they let it hang.
The small to medium size breasts women, if they are not just used to wearing bras, probably they are uncomfortable without them for any reasons.
Sometimes it becomes a habit, women tend to feel awkward or self-conscious without the usual. In fact, the slight discomfort, if not overly uncomfortable tends to be ok rather than the awkwardness.
Wearing bras has been link to breast cancer, but other researcher debunks this claim. A French study also claims that bras makes breast sag.
The study claims the bras do the opposite of what it is supposed to do. It does not elevate back pain, it even makes breast saggier by weakening the tissues that holds up the weight of the breast.
Why women can’t give up wearing bras?
"Because breast need to be supported"
Actually, this is a myth. “Wearing a bra has no medical necessity whatsoever” says Susan M. Love, M.D in her "Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book". This is similar to the myth that women supposedly need corsets to support their stomach muscles. Just like the other parts of the body does not require any support.
But there are large-breasted women may need the support from bras. It helps carry the weight of the breast and keep it in place. But as side effect, the straps dig into the shoulders and the back suffers.
“Because I was oriented that it’s immoral or indecent if my nipples show”
We have our own origins of orientations, others have now accepted the millennial norms, other still stick to the old norm for some good reason. While many women accentuate the sexuality of their breasts with bras, equally many or more feel that bras are sort of a necessary "modest covering" for breasts. This is also to keep their self-safe and in peace to avoid sexual assault and disrespect.
“Because everyone wears a bra, then I should wear one too. The unspoken rules of the society”
This is one reason also why women won’t let go of their bras. Since everyone is not yet letting go of their bras then maybe I’d be safe to go with what everybody is doing. I don’t want to be different, I want to be where it is safe and what’s normal.
“Because I need to wear bras for my job and it is a requirement for the dress code”
Even to the most uncomfortable reason of wearing bras, you can’t get away If you are being paid to represent a company. Some companies require corporate suits and that you must look good. So, you have no choice but to wear one.
Even if the company does not specifically tell you to wear one, but requires a certain uniform, wearing a bra would also be a good idea to avoid sore nipples from all day rubbing of the nipples due to the type of material your uniform is made of.
“Because I don’t want my nipples to be pointing at other people”
This is a true reason for wearing bras for many women, as we have mentioned above that breast have become a sexual part of our body instead of a mammary purpose. It’s kind of awkward for people to be looking at your nipples.
Others got use to of showing off their nipples in the public, but in general, there is still a big number of women that feels awkward about it. Others would dare to use nipple covers to get away with the regular bra.
“Because if I don’t wear bra, my breast would sag”
This has been a long-time belief that the bra need a bra for support to avoid being pulled down by gravity. Jean-Denis Rouillon, a professor at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, claims in his study that “bras make breast sag” and that “bras are a false need” His team conducted research on 300 women ages 18-35 for over 15 years. His study concludes that women got a 7mm lift on their nipples as they never wear bras for the entire year.
The study did not mention about what size of breast these women have and makes a loop hole for this study. This maybe true with women with small breast and avoid breast to go south. Probably what he wants to proof that a body part may deteriorate its function if unused for a long span of time.
Just like casted arms, they shrink as they are supported by a band to avoid movement. In the case of the breast, the ligaments deteriorate its strength if they are being supported always with a bra. By going bra less, this allows the ligaments to strengthen itself by carrying the weight of your breast.
"A mistaken popular belief maintains that wearing a bra strengthens your breasts and prevents their eventual sagging. But you sag because of the proportion of fat and tissue in your breasts, and no bra changes that."
Susan M. Love, M.D. in her "Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book."
But for the big-breasted and heavy ones, I guess this may not be the case as there is a possibility to stretch the ligaments and skin overtime due to the weight and size of the breast.
So, for those who are young and small breasted young women, you might want to agree with the French study and refrain from casting your breast with bras and let it hang and strengthen your ligaments so can keep your perky breast.
Or get a less restrictive bra that provides support and painless at the same time. So it goes to the next reason why women can’t give up wearing bras.
“Because I do sports and my boobs bounce and it hurts”
We all know that over bouncing boobs will hurt. To keep the breast in place or at least limit the bounce or movement it will avoid breast pain. As people get health conscious, sports bra became a fashion trend.
"Because I want to look that I have a big breast."
Among teenagers who are very self-conscious, pushing up the breast and have a cleavage is a plus to have to look good. Wearing a bra would be perfect to push the breast up and hold up some pads.
If the society wouldn't have such a craze about large breasts being better, these girls and women wouldn't need to feel so self-conscious about this issue!
But if it’s that important to you, might as well use a less restrictive bra which provides the same lift as push up bras.
"Because I am breastfeeding, and I need to wear nursing bras."
When you are pregnant your breast begins to swell as your breast begin to make milk, so it gets larger than usual. Nursing moms are indeed told to wear nursing bras. This is not only to carry the heavy mammary glands but also to protect it from exposure to bacteria.
This is also handy way to hide leaking of breast milk and if you are a working mom, maybe you want to wear one in order to avoid the society’s pressure. Although it is not a necessity to wear nursing bras, if you just stay at home, you can always use other alternatives.
So, should I wear one or not?
The choice to wear or not to wear a bra is yours. Many women are very used to wearing bras, and feel uncomfortable in public without them. Social occasions may require you to wear one.
Bra wearing leave health doubts that bras are link to breast diseases and other physical discomfort due to the straps. So if you can’t give up a bra, you might spend more on getting a good fitting bra or you get a less restrictive bra.
If you have opportunities to go bra less like at home or if you are wearing a think outfit that can hide your nipples, you rather take those opportunities and leave your bras at home.
