A Bit Of Science About Stress
An abundance of the chemical cortisol — which is basically the root of stress, can cause major damage to the body and the mind.
People with high amounts of cortisol are prone to weight gain, delirium, sleep deprivation, and anxiety.
It’s funny because Cortisol is supposed to mesh well with your adrenal glands; if you look at humans at their most primitive state in time, they had short spurts of stress that revolved around survival.
Think about cavemen trying to hunt down food and the quick stress and immediate pleasure that was obtained from getting their prize. A quick shot of stress, adrenaline, and satisfaction, all within a short amount of time.
Unfortunately, the type of stress that we are experiencing today is a bit different. We have elongated periods of time where we are anxious and stressed out (specifically, stressed at work).
And those long periods of time that we go feeling stressed, mixed with the lack of physical activity, and little-to-none reward or satisfaction, is causing our adrenal glands to go nuts.
Now more that ever, people are starting to feel more stressed at work and anxious at the office. And we’ve done some research to see what type of effects stress has on people at work.
Here’s some more information about those 11 statistics about stress and what to do about it:
1. A Lot Of Money Could Be Saved
$300Bil a year are spent in stress related health care costs .
By having a low stress area that focuses on having happy, healthy and productive employees, companies can save boatloads of money.
Think about what can be accomplished with an extre $300 billion put into the economy?
All the new jobs that can be opened, all the new job opportunities that can arise. The more productive people are, the more beneficial they are to society as a whole
2.Damaging To Health
77% of people in offices across the country are regularly experiencing physical malfunctions caused by stress.
There’s a lack of effort being made by companies from an employee wellness standpoint.
People aren’t doing anything to benefit their health within their office and work is becoming a physically and mentally grueling task.
Leaders can focus on making better decisions to affect their employees’ health. Something as simple as doing things to better ergonomics at work, can be all the difference. Even trying something like walking meetings will alleviate stress and increase productivity.
3. Mental Health Issues
73% are dealing with psychological issues that are caused by stress.
Think about that for a second, that’s a lot of people that are dealing with mental health problems because they aren’t coping with stress the right way.
We’ve previously written about mental health problems caused by work, and the numbers aren’t pretty.
A good leader will do whatever he can to create a stress-free environment.
4. Extreme Stress
33% of employees saying that they’re dealing with extreme stress .
There’s a bit of a difference when it comes to regular stress and extreme stress.
Think about it like this, extreme stress causes severe physical malfunction. We’re talking about panic attacks, mental breakdowns, and can literally cause cancer.
Poor leaders would never let things get this out of control. Sometimes having engaged employees can make all the difference.
You can definitely better someone’s mood in the office by giving them some time and letting them cool down. Last thing you want is a mess of employees burning out and hating their lives.
5. Stress At Work Getting Worse By The Year
48% Feel as if their stress has increased over the past 5 years.
An old folk singer said that the times are changin’, this couldn’t be truer.
We live in a society where people want more done faster. Aside from it being done quickly, people want things done perfectly.
The pressure for success is putting a good strain on a lot of people and it’s driving everyone from entrepreneurs and big enterprise employees nuts.
It’s important to adapt to the speed of time, but it’s just as important to have a clear mind.
Make sure that you as an employee can avoid stress at work and take things one day at a time.
6. Low Money, Mo’ Problems
76% of people cite money and work as the leading cause of their stress.
People are overworked and underpaid. Going back to what was said before, things are getting faster and faster every year.
The amount of stress and the workload people are doing is flat out ridiculous.
Most employers aren’t doing enough to support their talented employees from a financial standpoint. So whenever you hear about those awesome places to work, or those cool offices, it almost seems like a pipe dream.
Try using an employee engagement software to find out what your employees want and how your company can make its offices better.
7. Sleep Deprivation
48% reported lying awake at night due to stress.
Sleep is good. We all know this. It feels great to wake up well-rested after a long day at the office. That’s what makes Saturday’s special.
An abundance of stress from work in the daytime can cause you to stay up throughout the night. So when you have those long, grueling days, it’s not helping you out with your leisure and rest time.
I know it may sounds a bit unique, but meditation at work and outside of work can help out big time. You’ll be able to clear your mind for a bit and just get away from it all.
8. Keep Your Friends Close
54% said stress has caused them to fight with people close to them.
It’s important to maintain your interpersonal relations with your peers outside of work.
People get caught up with their work so much that they forget about their friends and family members, they end up treating them as secondary figures in their life, as if they didn’t help to get them to their current state.
I know that I’ve been a victim of this. I’ve mistreated some of my friends and family, so at my most vulnerable point, I decided to spaz out and ignore them. Fortunately, I have a good, understanding supporting cast.
So remember, keep your friends close and be well-balanced enough to manage work and play.
9. Don’t Hate The Profession
60% of 26,000 workers were so unhappy that they would prefer to choose a new career.
Think about that statistic, more than half of employees in companies from all across the country would rather find a new career than be in their current position.
I think the majority of the blame goes to management for not creating a cool atmosphere for employees. I think having an engaging atmosphere with people that want to be there, creates happiness and a sense of belonging.
Don’t hate the profession, be mad at the situation and do things that’ll make it better.
10. Emotional Disconnection
87% of workers are emotionally disconnected from their workplaces .
That number is way too damn high, don’t you think?
Nearly 90% of people are just disconnected from their workplace. They’re just going through the motions and doing the bare-minimum to get by, collect checks, and go home.
So, aside from being stressed out, people aren’t even connected to their profession well enough to want to be there.
It’s almost like you’re obtaining unnecessary stress, just to make ends meet. This type of thinking needs to change and management needs to do things to better the work environment.
11. Unhappiness Is Bad For BusinessUnhappy workers are 10% less productive
Although this number is fairly low, it’s still an important statistic. Take into account that 36% of employees would give up $5,000 a year in salary to be happier at work and it becomes alarming.
Out of all the employees that feel stressed out and don’t want to be at work — which I’m assuming is a large number, they will all be 10% less productive.
Companies need to start being more proactive in de-stressing the workplace. Give employees more freedom and work-life balance to create a calmer office. Allow employees to take some time to get away from the ruckus and clear their minds.
