Headache is very common in today’s busy world, this may be a sign that there is something wrong with your body, but most of the time they are just the result of stress, dehydration, or overdoing something.
While there are plenty of treatments to reduce headaches, including over-the-counter medications, they don’t always eliminate the symptoms. It may be very tempting to take this kind of relief, but you don’t want to make yourself dependent on medication. In fact, there are lifestyle habits that can help your headache without you ever reaching for a pill.
1. Hot/cold applications
For muscle tension headaches, hot and/or cold compresses can offer relief. For the cold portion, place ice in a plastic bag covered with a thin cloth to avoid harming your skin. Place the ice pack on your forehead and/or cheeks, basically wherever the greatest source of pain is. Just be sure to limit cold pack applications to no more than 10 minutes at a time.
This involves applying fine and sharp needles to key areas on the body to promote energy flow. It will stimulate the body’s natural pain-relieving compounds, and it reduces headache frequency and severity.
With the use of Essential oils, aromatherapy can trigger positive and even healing response in the brain. Some smells have been reported to soothe and reduce the incidence of headaches. This includes peppermint extract, eucalyptus, and lavender oil.
Massage therapy may reduce chronic pain as well as ease muscle tension that causes headaches. It is very therapeutic and can relieve stress, take time to know the types of massage and schedule at least once a week depending on your stress levels.
Having not enough water in your system may contribute to headache, but it can be easily avoided. By simply hydrating yourself up to 8 glasses a day or take electrolyte-containing beverages such as Gatorade or Powerade. These drinks will hydrate you and reduce headaches.
6. Deep Breathing
Tension related headaches can sometimes be relieved with regular breathing and exercises that help focus your mind and ease your muscle. Do it in a comfortable and quite place in your home or office or other locations where you can relax for a few seconds. As you relax, your muscles tightness will reduce.
Lack of sleep can cause health problems and may lead to chronic headaches. If you know that you lack sleep for some reasons, there are several ways you can improve the amount and quality of your sleep. Commit yourself to sleep schedules and go to be at regular times, this will improve your sleeping habits. Avoid any stimulants few hours before you sleep and to avoid the trips to the bathroom.
8. Skip the Bra
As bras support and cover your breast, but in the contrary, they cause you headaches. This could be one reason you are reaching for a Tylenol, a wrong fitting bra may cause headaches, while your breast weight causes stress on the shoulder, which leads up to the neck. Sometimes, if not all the time, skip the bra to give yourself a break.
9. Headache Diet Diary
Some foods, while they are delicious have been known to contribute headaches. While it is not true for all, but maybe with you, some foods may cause your headaches. You may keep a diary of foods every time you experience headaches. This way, you may be able to trace which particular food that triggers your headaches.
10. Sip soothing teas
The warmth of a steaming herbal tea cup makes an excellent way to wind down at night. Herbal Teas have soothing qualities can have pain-relieving effects and can help you relax, like your favorite chamomile, ginger and dandelion.
